Doll Workshop

Santa Fe Trail Center to hold Sawdust Doll Making Workshop

The Santa Fe Trail Center will host a Doll Making Workshop on July 13, 2013 from 9am to 4pm.  Participants will make a sawdust doll in a Pioneer Girl motif.   The cost of the workshop is $15 and includes lunch at the Trail Center.  While most materials are provided there is a short list of items participants should bring.  This list is available from the Trail Center and will be provided at the time of registration. 

Participants must be 10 years of age and up or accompanied by an adult.  Some sewing experience is recommended but not required.  The workshop is restricted to 12 people so early registration is a good idea. 

The workshop will be led by Rhonda Cooley, a Larned native.  Rhonda graduated from Larned High School and attended Kansas State University.  After retiring, Rhonda volunteered at the Toy & Miniature Museum in Kansas City, MO where she made costumes for the doll displays.  She also repaired and dressed dolls for the Doll Cradle in Shawnee Mission, KS. 

Rhonda first gave this workshop at Shawnee Indian Mission, a Kansas State Historical Site, 20 years ago.  Since then, she has led this workshop for various other organizations, including a quilt shop.  Rhonda guarantees “. . . each participant will leave with a finished doll, fully dressed, and have a really fun day.”

Quilt Exhibit

The Santa Fe Trail Center presents:

Patchwork Pawnee: Our Community in Quilts

Larned, KS: Nothing seems to evoke the pioneer prairie home quite like a large, brightly patterned quilt.  Patchwork Pawnee: Our Community in Quilts opens on June 4^th at the Santa Fe Trail Center in Larned, KS.  The exhibit contains over 20 quilts donated from around the Larned community and Pawnee County specifically for this exhibit. 

Each quilt’s personal and distinct story will be told in the exhibit.  Besides the history and stories behind the quilts, quilt patterns will also be explained to show how specific patterns tell different stories and have unique meanings.

Patchwork Pawnee will be on display in the auditorium at the Santa Fe Trail Center through the end of June.

The Santa Fe Trail Center is a unique educational institution devoted to the interpretation of the historic transportation route known as the Santa Fe Trail. Presentation Explores Orphan Trains in Kansas

Larned, KS – The Fort Larned Historical Society will host their Annual Meeting with a program, Orphan Trains in Kansas, a presentation and discussion by Marilyn J. Holt on Monday, November 14  at 7:00p.m. at the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum and Library. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. Contact the Santa Fe Trail Center at 620-285-2054 for more information. The program is made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council.

     The “orphan trains” brought poor children from the eastern cities to rural Kansas from 1867 until the 1920s. Holt will share firsthand accounts of orphan train riders that challenge the picture of childhood in the “good old days.”

     Marilyn J. Holt is an independent historian who consults on Kansas history. Her publications include books on the orphan trains, rural women, Kansas teenagers, Indian orphanages, and children in the American West.

     Orphan Trains in Kansas is part of the Kansas Humanities Council’s Kansas 150 Speakers Bureau commemorating the Kansas sesquicentennial. The special edition Speakers Bureau features presentations and discussions about Kansas and what it means to be a Kansan over time and across generations.

     The Kansas Humanities Council conducts and supports community-based programs, serves as a financial resource through an active grant-making program, and encourages Kansans to participate in their communities. Tired Iron Show – Rain Day

     The Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned, continued their tradition of bringing a little rain with our annual Tired Iron Show. The museum staff hopes you enjoyed the rain and came out for the fun anyhow. In case you missed your favorite events this year, the Trail Center is hosting a Tired Iron Show rain day!

     Friday, October 21, the museum is hosting free demonstrations. Saw milling begins at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. The logs are being used to construct a log cabin on the museum’s grounds to help us more fully interpret the history of life on the frontier. The Kids Corn Coin Hunt will begin at 12:30 p.m. so bring your tot or tyke our to try their luck. Wheat threshing and corn shelling demonstrations will be happening at 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.

     The Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned, invites the public to a Cornhusk Dolls Workshop presented by Fort Larned Park Ranger, Ellen Jones. This is the perfect time of year to make a cornhusk doll to add to your fall decorations. There many uses for cornhusks, but not with such lasting appeal as the cornhusk doll. He will introduce a traveling trunk filled with artifacts that would have been carried along the Santa Fe Trail.      To celebrate Labor Day the Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned, is offering free admission to WWII veterans for the holiday weekend. The temporary exhibit “The Spirit of ’45” will continue to be on display. This exhibit commemorates the generation who fought in WWII and features artifacts and photographs donated by local servicemen and women.  The Trail Center will be open from 9a.m. to 5p.m. all weekend including Monday, September 5, 2011.

     Also in September, the Trail Center will be honoring the ten year anniversary of 9/11. On September 11, 2011 the museum will be showing a 1 hour HBO presentation: In Memoriam: New York City 9/11/01. Show times are 1pm and 3pm and admission to the show is free. A free will donation will be collected to give to local veterans groups in honor of the men and women who went to war as a result of the 9/11 attack.

     The Santa Fe Trail Center is located 2 miles west of Larned on Hwy K-156.  After Labor Day the museum will return to our winter hours Tuesday-Sunday 9a.m. to 5p.m and closed on Mondays. Come and explore the types of firearms used along the Santa Fe Trail. The program will include an introduction about women and their use of firearms at military posts.

Spirit of '45!

The Santa Fe Trail Center presents:

The Spirit of ‘45

The Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned, invites the public to view a temporary exhibit commemorating the generation who fought in World War II. The exhibit features artifacts and photographs related to the armed forces and the home front from 1940-1945.  Items from the museum’s collections highlighting local servicemen and women will be on display. The U.S. Congress has designated August 14 as National Spirit of ’45 Day. The American Association of State and Local History has encouraged museums across the country to participate in honoring the Spirit of ’45.
